THE greater portion of the matter composing these pages was printed as a series of articles in the Newcastle Weekly Chronicle, 19011902.  The articles themselves were written in Madeira during a compulsory residence there in the winter of 19001901. Hearty thanks are due to the proprietors of the paper for permission to reproduce them in the present form.
